Florida House Learning Center
Betty Alpaugh
Sarasota, FL 34233
941-316-1200
The Florida house learning center is an "earth-friendly" demonstration of appropriate technology and design for living in southwest Florida. It is open to the public for tours, has hand-out information on materials and methods, and conducts classes by the cooperative extension service. The purpose of the model home is to show how using "off-the-shelf" products can save water and energy, can provide a healthy indoor air quality, and can use local and recycled products. The model " Florida yard" conserves water and protects the local environment by reducing storm water run-off. The design includes native and drought tolerant plants, edible landscaping, micro-irrigation, and composting.

Frank, Erica
Erica Frank
Atlanta, GA 30303-3219
404-616-5603
Erica Frank is Associate Professor, and Director, Preventive Medicine Residency Program, Department of Family and Preventive Medicine Emory University School of Medicine. Her mountain house is the first totally energy independent home in Georgia. It is situated in a corner of the Nantahala wilderness, a 24,000 acre wilderness in the Southern Appalachians, about 2 hours north of Atlanta. She makes her own electricity (with a microhydro system in her small stream), heat and hot water (a passive solar design and solar panels). The house is also built from materials with low embodied energy (e.g., she made the lighting from scrap metal, porch is plastic lumber made from recycled milk jugs, masonry is from reused concrete, and sheetrock is from titanium tailings). Erica Frank's house in town is a renovation of an existing co-housing home. Co-housing is of itself a sustainable concept; folks have their own smallish homes, and come together regularly and frequently for meals and camraderie in a common house and in each others' adjoining homes. In her renovation, she added a solar panel (for domestic hot water and home heating), increased the insulation substantially, added tripled-paned windows, and used sustainable materials where available (including a formal library constructed entirely from wheatboard and a salvaged poplar tree).
