Evergreen Nylon Recycling

Dan Harkness
706-849-6405

Evergreen Nylon Recycling, llc (ENR) is a 50/50 joint venture between AlliedSignal's Polymer Division and DSM Chemicals North America. They are building a plant in Augusta to process 250 million pounds per year of waste nylon 6 carpet. They will produce about 100 million pounds per year of caprolactam, the monomer for nylon 6 and about 150 million pounds per year of Co-Product. In the USA, nylon 6 yarn is produced by AlliedSignal, BASF, and other carpet makers. The nylon face of the carpet represents less than 45% of the weight the carpet; the backing about 55% +. The backing consists of calcium carbonate, latex, and polypropylene. The Co-Product is a solid flake material consisting of the materials in the carpet backing. After January 1, 2000, the Co-Product will be shipped to a cement manufacturer who will burn the material in a lime kiln (mixed in with his regular feed stock) to produce cement. The entire waste carpet feed is recycled to usable products. The caprolactam will be polymerized into nylon 6 chips for reuse and the backing will be used to make cement, removing 250 million pounds of material from landfills annually.
