Description:
A model home featuring green building materials and systems, located adjacent to three large, active community gardens. Recent renovations and rebuilding incorporated innovative materials such as recycled newspaper insulation (cellulose), salvaged cabinets and flooring, bamboo countertops, high efficiency lighting, natural linoleum, certified sustainable wood, and water-efficient plumbing fixtures. On-site work by UC Berkeley landscape architecture graduate students included a solar garden shed demonstrating the use of straw bale, light clay, and other alternative materials. The shed is attached to a gateway-trellis of salvaged steel frames, intended as support for photovoltaic panels. The rear yard is being developed according to principles of permaculture.
