Building Concerns has, since 1991, provided information and publications to help in the implementation of sustainable design and build practices. Their national regional resource directories program includes listing of all service providers in the green building sector, including local initiatives and programs, and case studies. There is a Northern California directory. Building Concerns produced the first national green building newsletter, Building Concerns Newsletter, the first national products directory, unique events, and content at different web sites.

The City of San Francisco is a national leader in programs for municipal energy conservation, recycling, water conservation, pollution prevention and public health. It has a very active environmental advocacy community, whose members work locally to maintain and restore our environmental heritage and to protect the health of our citizens. These programs help advance the City toward the goal of becoming a sustainable city. San Francisco's municipal environmental programs are not centralized under one agency, and local environmental groups pursue their projects independently. The community on San Francisco's Environment has created a first-ever guide to the environmental programs currently offered by the City of San Francisco and the local environmental community. It includes a number of organizations and agencies involved with: energy conservation; hazardous materials; neighborhood beautification, parks and urban forestry; noise abatement; policy, planning and zoning; recycling and garbage; transportation; water; wild and domestic animals; and information.

Description:
ENERGY EFFICIENCY: Open to alternative energy use and encourage solar energy by waving permit fees and only charging for electrical and installation. There is talk of implementing a formal green initiatives program, but have not found it to be crucial as most new construction in Napa County is progressive WASTE MANAGEMENT: Considered to be on the forefront for adaptive reuse of materials and alternative construction methods. GREEN BUILDING: Currently do not have a formal program as far as green building initiatives and planning. However, Napa County was rated second in its jurisdiction for strawbale construction.

SEC. 82.3 RESOURCE EFFICIENT BUILDING PROGRAM : (a) Establishment and Purpose. There is hereby created within the Department of the Environment a Resource-Efficient Building Program. ENERGY EFFICIENCY: SF Environment's Resource Efficiency Program coordinates the city's resource efficiency and energy conservation efforts. It also provides resource reduction and energy conservation tips to city employees and the general public. The Resource Efficiency Program is responsible for implementing the City's Resource Efficient Building Ordinance. Resource-efficient buildings â also called "green" buildings â are designed, constructed, renovated, and operated in an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly manner. These buildings save the City money, while cutting down on the amount of energy, water and materials used. The City's 1999 Resource Efficient Building Ordinance mandated that SF Environment develop and manage a portfolio of pilot projects, the intent being that after a three year period, enough data would be collected to mandate green building codes and guidelines. WASTE MANAGEMENT: Sec. 82.5 CONSTRUCTION AND DEMOLITION DEBRIS MANAGEMENT: This requirement applies to all Construction Projects with a total projected cost of $90,000 or more at City-owned Facilities and New and Existing City Leaseholds. All City Departments shall ensure that each Construction Project subject to this Chapter shall minimize construction and demolition debris disposal. The SF Recycling Program works with residents & businesses to promote waste prevention, reuse and recycling throughout the City in order to conserve valuable resources and reduce the amount of material that is landfilled.
