The Center for Regenerative Studies is a unique research, teaching, living and working center providing a new environmental focus and academic program for the California State University. The Center, located on an unimproved site between the University campus and the Spadra landfill, is targeted for eventual self-sufficiency. Solar buildings, reclaimed water systems, aquaculture, and environmental agricultural programs provide a framework for research and experimentation. Phase I provides approximately 14,000 square feet of faculty and student resident housing for twenty, kitchen and dining commons, work rooms, lecture and seminar rooms, administrative offices, laboratory, greenhouse and field office. Future Phases II and III will expand the housing, academic, water, aquaculture and agriculture facilities to service a resident population of one hundred at a total estimated budget of $10 million. The Center is funded by private foundations and research projects. The work conducted here will focus on environmentally sensitive solutions to contemporary survival issues.

The new Constituent Service Center opened earlier this year providing public services to district residents. Councilman Ridley-Thomas established a task force to rebuild the 8th District field office that was destroyed in the 1992 civil unrest. Supporting his efforts, the Environmental Affairs Department formed an environmental design group comprised of the project architects, city departments and the volunteer services of John Picard and Paul Murdoch. The product of these efforts has been a practical, cost-effective, yet advanced building that demonstrates environmentally-sensitive building practices that can be incorporates into other projects. Some features include: high efficiency windows, electronic day-lighting, a high-efficiency HVAC system, recycled steel framing, recycled glass floor tiles, recycled plastic restroom doors, newsprint insulation, carpet made from recycled plastic bottles, formaldehyde-free cabinetry, VOC-free paint, low-flush toilets and an electric vehicle charging station.

Mr. Dobberteen is a planner with the County of Santa Barbara Planning & Developmental Department, Division of Comprehensive Plan. His primary work has been on the Goleta Community Plan and Housing Element, and currently his projects include the creation of a transfer of development credits ordinance and researching ways to revitalize Goleta Old Town. Through his work at the local government level, Matt finds valuable opportunities to share information regarding approaches to sustainable development with both the public and private sectors.

Energy Resource Center - Southern California Gas Company - Case Study

The Southern California Gas Company's recycled Energy Resource Center practices what it preaches: it's a showcase for the latest energy technologies, including HVAC systems, indoor air quality and industrial processes. The 45,000 sq. ft. facility is a conference center and one-stop shop dedicated to providing decision-makers with information on the latest energy-efficient, cost-effective and environmentally sensitive technologies. The building itself was recycled from a former gas company facility. About 80% of all ERC construction materials, interior furnishings and displays are either recycled or the products of recycled materials or manufacturing processes using renewable resources.

Goleta Old Town Revitalization Project

The purpose of the Goleta Old Town Revitalization Project is to restore the economic and social vitality to an aging urban core. Examples of sustainability include amendments to the County's zoning ordinance to encourage second and third story additions for office and residential uses, acquiring community garden space, incorporating pedestrian and bicycle access, restoring creek corridors and habitats and using drought tolerant plants for downtown landscaping. The Sustainability Project, a volunteer group of local architects, planners and contractors, wil be offering technical advice on design, building materials and the reuse of existing structures as new projects are built.

The Hesperia Museum and Nature Center designed by architect Nader Khalili/Cal-Earth for the Hesperia Recreation and Park District is under construction in Hesperia, California. The complex of sixteen domes and vaults is the first of its kind in the world to be permitted to be built totally of earthen construction using Superadobe and Ceramic technologies.

The Audubon Society's environmental work includes the following: helping with the development of the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Area in the San Fernando Valley; helping to save the Santa Clara River corridor from the severe environmental impact of a 24,000 unit Newhall Ranch business and residential development; and joining with other conservation organizations in preventing the construction of a golf course in the Big Tujunga Wash the only wild habitat of its kind in Los Angeles County.

Provision of broad residential mix, on-site employment opportunities, neighborhood retail and recreation, pedestrian environment and superior building design. Ecology a critical aspect of plan, reflecting progressive solutions to water quality, resource management and habitat restoration. Their Ballona Wetlands project includes 260 acres to be restored and preserved as one of the last remaining tidal marshes in Southern California, and will be one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries in a United States city.

This award-winning sustainable office building rehabilitation showcases energy-saving systems, environmentally friendly products, healthy indoor air quality, water conservation, construction and in-house recycling along with building materials which contain recycled content. The design team included Platt/Whitelaw Architects, Architect of Record, Lynn Froeschle, AIA, environmental consulting architect; McParlane & Associates, mechanical engineer, Turpin & Rattan Engineering, and Gottfried Technology, energy efficiency consultant. The City of San Diego, San Diego Gas & Electric, Electric Power Research Institute and Public Technology Incorporated were partners in this green building demonstration project.
