California State Polytechnic University Pomona, through its College of Environmental Design and the Center for Regenerative Studies teaches interdisciplinary classes and conducts innovative research in aspects of sustainability and resource conservation. Through the departments of architecture, landscape architecture, urban and regional planning and art, faculty and students are involved with issues of sustainable design in the creation of both large and small scale environments.

The California Institute of Earth Art and Architecture (Cal-Earth) is at the cutting edge of Earth and Ceramic Architecture technologies today, dedicated to research and education and directed by architect Nader Khalili. Courses teach hands-on how to build. Cal-Earth is affiliated with Southern California Institute of Architecture, Los Angeles, and are building Hesperia Museum and Nature Center.

Richard Schoen, FAIA, Research Professor in Architecture at UCLA teaches at sustainable architecture and community planning in the Department of Architecture and Urban Design, UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture. Introductory graduate level classes in climatology, energy/environment/passive solar, and sustainable building materials. Year-long sequence in sustainable architecture and community planning, culminating in a spring design studio focusing on eco-tourist and park/community or visitor/environment learning center prototypes applied to local context resulting in buildings that 'teach' about how they respond to users and the environment.

Educational Communications, Inc., a non-profit, tax-exempt organization founded in 1958, is dedicated to improving the quality of life on this planet. Nancy Pearlman oversees its many environmental projects including The Compendium Newsletter, EcoNews television series, Environmental Directions radio series, the Ecology Center of Southern California (a regional conservation group), Ecoview newspaper articles, Project Ecotourism, Environmental Resources Library, and the Directory of Environmental Organizations. The group works on all environmental issues from the local to international level. Services provided include a Speaker's Bureau, award-winning public service announcements, radio and television documentaries, and input into the decision making process. They educate the public about the problems and the solutions for saving all species and for preserving the Earth.

LandLab has developed a wide variety of educational programs about the environment, supported research on landfills, refuse recycling and materials recovery processes and their effects on the environment, developed strategies for site revegetation and multiple use and implemented a campus wide recycling project.

Ralph Knowles is Professor Emeritus of Architecture at USC, author and writer on solar-access policy and design. He is the originator of the "solar envelope," a zoning instrument that assures the largest building volume on a site without over-shadowing neighboring properties within constraints of time and season. His practice has included consulting to both architects and land planners.

Catriona Gay, AICP, MRTPI (Member Royal Planning Institute), is a Senior Campus Planner at UCSB. She has worked as a planner in both local government and as a planning consultant in California since 1984. She is a founding member and actively involved with the Westside Community Group. Her involvement with the Sustainability Project stems from an interest in moving towards more sustainable development, and in developing creative solutions to community problems.
